Tobacco was King. Clarksville's prosperity rested on this fact.
Tobacco Industry: Money Crop:
Tobacco transformed Clarksville into a prominent economic center during the Antebellum Period. By 1855, Clarksville's Type 22 Dark Fired tobacco, dubbed the "strongest tobacco in the world," was particularly popular in England, Germany, France, and Italy. In 1858, almost 18,000 hogshead barrels valued at $2,390,000 were shipped from Clarksville Landing and Trice's Landing. Money from the tobacco industry was the source of wealth that financed the building of several mansions and churches in Clarksville. |
