This corner stone is all that remains of the first Church of Saint John which stood opposite the present church. "This first stone of St. John's Church was laid by the R. John Dubois on the 15th day of May 1800."
Father Dubois later became the third bishop of New York. The present church was begun on March 19, 1833 and consecrated by Archbishop Eccleston on April 26, 1837. |
