June 16, 1829 - February 17, 1909

The famed Chiricahua Apache medicine man was a strong symbol and mighty warrior for the Native Americans fighting against settlers' continual encroachment on tribal lands in the 19th Century. His surrender in 1886 effectively marked the end of Indian resistance. Though he spent most of his later years on a reservation at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he travelled to several World's Fairs, toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and was a celebrity at Theodore Roosevelt's inauguration.
