Ten years after Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Robert Lincoln was concerned his mother was mentally unwell, citing paranoia and strange tendencies with money. Through a whirlwind Chicago court trial, he succeeded in having his mother committed to Bellevue Place, a private sanitarium. It was a heartbreaking time for everyone involved. She was released months later and lived most of her remaining years in Europe.
