Cryptomenytices et cryptographiae libri IX, 1624
Building on the system devised by Vigenere, the Duke of Braunschweig-Luneberg explained how a series of lines or dots within an image of any kind could be keyed to an underlying alphabetical grid. In this pastoral scene, each dot -- in the eyes of animals and people, the fruit on trues, and the stars in the sky -- signals through its location a specific letter and encodes an alchemical aphorism.
