Washington places his hand on the bible held y James Otis, Secretary of the Senate, to take the inaugural oath. Chancellor Robert R. Livingston of the New York Supreme Court administers the oath. Other figures represent Vice President John Adams, General Henry Knox, Representative Roger Sherman, and Major Generals St. Clair and Steuben. This painting is thought to accurately depict the balcony of Federal Hall and other buildings on Wall Street.
