On September 11, terrorism reached across oceans once thought to insulate the United States. In response, the US led a coalition of international forces to Afghanistan and the Middle East. A worldwide search for al Qaeda operatives resulted in the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011. A heightened awareness of terrorism is part of life in the twenty-first century.
