Existing comment: I Remember:
In many cultures there is a long tradition of leaving offerings at sites of violence. Memorials are created as places for shared remembering and expressions of mourning where visitors may leave something of themselves for public consideration.
By the afternoon of September 11, people began to leave offerings near the Flight 93 crash site, creating temporary memorials. Thousands of tributes and acts of remembrance, both spontaneous and planned, are reminders of the outpouring of emotion prompted by the terrorist attack.
These tributes are a way to express, in a public space, "I remember."
