Existing comment: Walsh-McLean House

This house was completed in 1903 as the home of Thomas Walsh and his family. He had made his millions in the Colorado gold mines and incorporated pieces of gold in the house's design. It was, at the time, the most expensive house in the DuPont Circle area, having cost upwards of $800,000 to build.

Within two years, the Walsh's son was killed in a traffic accident. Thomas Walsh died five years later. Walsh's daughter Evalyn acquired the cursed Hope Diamond. She married newspaper magnate (including the Washington Post) Edward Beale McLean. Their son died in another traffic accident and Edward lost his name and his sanity as a result of the Teapot Dome Scandal.

During World War II, the Red Cross used the house and then it was sold to Indonesia which uses it for its embassy.
