Existing comment: Farley's Death

Farley, the Patterson's sheepdog, was a happy (and sloppy) character who brightened the harsh winter, and made many readers smile. He was both the protector and beloved furry friend. When young April wandered down to the overflowing ravine behind her house, Farley knew he had to watch over the youngest Patterson. Luckily, Farley put his love into action, and saved April when she fell into the fast flowing creek. Farley and his offspring, Edgar, helped April survive by keeping her above water and alerting John and Elly. While April survived the traumatic event, Farley, who was aging, did not. Although he died a hero, the tragic death of Farley devastated Lynn's fans. One of her cartoonist colleagues also denounced the death of Farley, and even threatened to kill off his own beloved cartoon canine!
