Existing comment: Canada and the United States:
Remembrance and Resilience:
In the days following September 11, 2001, Canada stood by the US; not only as an ally, but also as a friend and neighbour.
With American airspace shutdown, 17 airports across Canada took in 239 redirected planes. Whole communities -- like Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Montreal, Quebec; and Edmonton, Alberta -- opened their hearts and homes to tens of thousands of stranded passengers. Members of these communities provided more than just shelter and food, but also friendship and support in a time of need.
Ordinary Canadians donated blood. Firefighters, police and forensics experts from across Canada joined the search and rescue efforts at Ground Zero.
Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, Canadians and Americans mourned the lives that were lost. They supported each other and reaffirmed a common commitment to peace.
This exhibit offers a retrospective of the human dimension of Canadians' spontaneous response in the aftermath of the attacks.
Friends. Partners. Allies.
