Alongside Arthur Erickson and Vice President George H. W. Bush, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney unveiled the building's cornerstone on April 28, 1988.
A year later on May 3rd, 1989 the Embassy officially opened its doors with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Ambassador Derek Burney and US Secretary of State James Baker in attendance. The event attracted numerous high-profile guests including US Congressmen, Canadian entertainers and artists, heads of Washington museums and public cultural institutions, industry leaders, and architects. Guests and participants were greeted in the courtyard by the Canadian Armed Forces Central Band. Opera baritone Louis Quilico of Montreal, Quebec, sang both national anthems.
