Architecture
Arthur Erickson's design evokes a sense of Canada, from its waterfalls to its wide open spaces. The long horizontal lines suggest the breadth of Canada, as does the light and spaciousness of the courtyard. The pool sympathizes Canada's ocean limits, while the miniature waterfall represents one of North America's best-known treasures -- Niagara Falls. The rotunda contains twelve pillars, representing the twelve Canadian provinces and territories at the time of construction. The seal above the rotunda's entrance represents the territory of Nunavut, which was formed in April, 1999. |
