Thomas Circle; Westin (Vista) Hotel
The second building down on the left used to be called the Vista Hotel International. Here, on January 18, 1990, Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry was filmed taking drugs from his girlfriend Rasheeda Moore who was working undercover for the District Attorney's office. Arrested after being filmed taking a crack pipe and puffing, he claimed "The bitch set me up" as he was being led away.
Removed from office, he was replaced by Sharon Pratt Dixon. After he was released from prison, he ran again for mayor of the city and won. This was another one of those white vs black perception things which didn't help white or Congressional impressions of the city. |
