Aitken's full-scale clay model for the granite relief on the right side of the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance depicts a soldier wearing a wolf's skin -- associated with Roman standard-bearers -- guarding the entrance to the documentary heritage of the nation. The Roman numerals refer to the date of the opening of the Archives in 1935. |
