Existing comment: British forces surrendered to George Washington in 1781. Two years later, the Revolution came to an official end when both sides signed the Treaty of Paris. Washington returned to Manhattan on November 25, 1783, "Evacuation Day" for the British soldiers headquartered there. He travelled through McGowan's Pass on Kingsbridge Road and made his way south to the city.
