Existing comment: Process and Design:
Paley's design process begins with a series of quick, fluid, conceptual sketches. Drawing his ideas not only aids him in refining his thoughts, but also helps explain the form and ideas to his clients. It is only at this stage that there is any possibility for real improvisation in his work. As his design process progresses, each successive drawing becomes more precise. The next stage of design is a series of cardboard models. Like his drawings, each model is completed with increasing precision to resolve any three-dimensional problems. For very elaborate projects, smaller-scale metal maquettes are produced before the eventual full-scale fabrication is started.
These models allow Paley and his team to meticulously research every aspect of production and to anticipate and forestall any potential issues. Paley and his assistants are engaged in each stage of production, working out site logistics, structural engineering, forming and forging metals, fabrication, surface finishing, and final installation.
Many of the works in this gallery are models for large sculptural projects: some were completed and others were never realized. Some depict various stages of the design process for a commission titled The Beckoning, produced for National Harbor in Fort Washington, Maryland.
