Carolinas Campaign, North and South Carolina:
Coordinating with several other Union forces, Sherman advanced northward from Savannah into the Carolinas. Southern resistance was minimal and Sherman's campaign caused the Confederates to evacuate Charleston, South Carolina. In North Carolina, Sherman successfully fought the Battle of Bentonville on March 19-20 against Confederate forces under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. On April 14, Sherman and Johnston agreed to an armistice and began negotiations for the Surrender of Johnston's army.
