March to the Sea, Georgia:
Abandoning his Atlanta base, Sherman marched across Georgia to Savannah on the Atlantic coast. Encountering little opposition, Sherman's troops cut a path sixty miles wide across Georgia, destroying military property and devastating the land. Sherman's tactics in this campaign are still debated. On December 13, Sherman established a link with Federal naval forces on the coast, forcing the Confederates to abandon Savannah on December 21.
