Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Virginia:
In August, Union Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan entered the Shenandoah Valley to crush Confederate forces under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early and to destroy supplies that were vital to the Confederacy. Battles occurred at Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Tom's Brook, Cedar Creek, and Waynesboro. Sheridan defeated Early's army, swept through the rich Shenandoah granary, and devastated the valley, using tactics similar to those Sherman employed in his March to the Sea.
