Grant's Overland Campaign, Virginia:
Promoted to general-in-chief of all Union armies, Grant accompanied the Army of the Potomac in a campaign to destroy Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and to capture Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy. In a series of bloody confrontations -- the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor -- Lee and Grant engaged in a war of attrition, each suffering enormous casualties as they gradually drew closer to the outskirts of Richmond. |
