The Campaign for Chattanooga: Tullahoma Phase:
After months of preparation, Union Maj. Gen. Rosecrans' Army of the Cumberland advanced against Gen. Bragg's Confederates. By deceiving and outmaneuvering his enemy, Rosecrans drove Bragg southeast beyond Tullahoma, Tennessee. Additional Federal troops threatened Bragg's supply line, forcing the Confederates to retreat across the Tennessee River and into Chattanooga. In just 11 days, with no major battles, Rosecrans had driven the Confederates out of middle Tennessee. Chattanooga could now be threatened directly.
