Gettysburg Campaign, Pennsylvania:
Hoping that a victory on Northern soil might encourage British intervention on behalf of the South, Lee advanced his army into Pennsylvania, gathering supplies from unspoiled Northern territory. At Gettysburg, as Lee reconcentrated his forces, the Confederates encountered Union Maj. Gen. George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac. For three days (July 1-3), Lee assaulted Meade's army but was unable to drive it from its defensive position. With Lee's retreat southward, the North had won an important victory. But both sides suffered; altogether Gettysburg claimed 51,000 casualties.
