Chancellorsville Campaign, Virginia
Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, the new commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, launched a campaign to force Lee's Army of Northern Virginia out of its positions near Fredericksburg. Though Hooker's forces outnumbered Lee's two to one, the Federals relinquished the initiative and were defeated at Chancellorsville and Salem Church. The cost of the Confederates' victory, however, was high: Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson died of complications from wounds.
