Vicksburg Campaign, Mississippi:
In March 1863, after five unsuccessful advanced against Vicksburg, Grant launched an elaborate campaign to capture this key Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River. Moving his forces through Louisiana to cross the Mississippi well below Vicksburg, Grant first captured Jackson, Mississippi, the state capital, and then marched west to lay siege to Vicksburg. Six weeks later, the city surrendered. The Mississippi was all but free of Confederate control.
