Battle of Stone's River, Tennessee:
Following the Kentucky Campaign, Bragg's Confederate Army of Tennessee concentrated at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. On December 26, Union Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans left Nashville and advanced his Army of the Cumberland on Murfreesboro. On December 31, the Confederates struck Rosecrans' army, battering the Union line's right and center. Bragg renewed the battle on January 2 but with no additional success. He then withdrew southward to the Duck River Valley.
