Mississippi River Campaigns:
Union naval and ground forces advanced from the north and south along the Mississippi River, progressively breaking the Confederate's hold. Long reaches of that important transportation artery fell to Federal control in successive actions: at New Madrid, Missouri (March); at Island #10, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana (April); and at Memphis, Tennessee (June). By July 1862, the Federals controlled the Mississippi, except for the tree miles of river fronting Vicksburg.
