August 10: Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri:
To stop the Confederate driver into Missouri, Union Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon led his outnumbered forces into battle at Wilson's Creek. Confederates under Brig. Gen. Benjamin McCulloch and Missouri state troops under Maj. Gen. Sterling Price were at first driven back. Lyon's death, however, prompted his successor to retreat, abandoning much of southern Missouri to Confederate control.
