Existing comment: When men of the 23d United States Colored Troops, including several from Spotsylvania County, went into combat for the first time on May 15, 1864, they marched under the flag of the Union Ninth Corps, like the one shown to the right. In the Army of the Potomac, all USCT were grouped into one division of the Ninth Corps, commanded only by white officers.
