Existing comment: This is a piece of plank from the Orange Plank Road. The planking sat upon stringers, and was intended to make the road passable even when wet. By the time of the war, the planking had started to rot. A trip over the road made for a rough ride. Along this road, Longstreet was wounded in the late morning on May 6, 1864.
