At the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, in just two weeks, 59 generals and acting generals in both armies were lost -- and many more would follow.
Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick, commander of the Union Sixth Corps, died on May 9, 1864. A sharpshooter shot him just as the general reassured those around him: "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." Sedgwick was the highest ranking Union officer killed during the Civil War.
