Savage Fighting, Ruined Home:
When Confederate troops blocked the road to the courthouse at Sarah Spindle's farm on May 8, Union troops -- urged on by anxious generals -- attacked at a place now known as Laurel Hill. Fighting raged in the widow Spindle's fields all that day, and again on May 10 and 12. All that combat moved the lines not an inch, yet thousands fell in the effort.
