Battle interrupted Widow Sarah Spindle's breakfast on May 8, and she and her family quickly took shelter as the fighting erupted around their home. During a lull in the battle, the Confederates set fire to the house to deny its use to Union sharpshooters. Mrs. Spindle fled, her unkempt locks flowing behind her. She never reclaimed her battered farm. |
