After Chancellorsville, the war stormed north to Pennsylvania and a small town called Gettysburg. The war was changing, both in technology and ferocity. Yet, one thing remained constant: the human cost in lives and suffering.
Some fought simply to defend their homes; most fought to sustain differing visions of what their nation should be. By 1864, the stakes were clear, and immense. Could the United States survive? Would slavery in America die? |
