As the carnage near Chancellorsville mounted, Confederate surgeons established hospitals at places like Melzi Chancellor's "Dowdall's Tavern," James Talley's farm, and Wilderness Baptist Church. Stonewall Jackson and hundreds of others were taken to a huge hospital near Wilderness Tavern.
The decision to amputate Stone Jackson's arm of a private's leg was not lightly made. Fewer than half of fractured limbs received amputation. About 75% of patients who received amputations survived. Jackson was among the unlucky ones.
