At the height of the fighting around Fairview, Union commander Joseph Hooker stood on the piazza at Chancellorsville. A Confederate shell struck the pillar next to him, knocking him unconscious and rendering him groggy for the remainder of the day. The mishap left the Union army leaderless at its most critical moment.
