Existing comment: Flags were prized and essential parts of the battlefield landscape. Soldiers risked everything to protect their flags -- and to take those of their enemies. Many flags were won and lost in the woods around Chancellorsville, and many a soldier died capturing or defending them.

10th Virginia Flag:
The 10th Virginia lost one of their flags at Chancellorsville, but managed to save their state colors, displayed here. The 10th Virginia belonged to Colonel Edward T.H. Warren's Confederate brigade. In the course of the battle, Warren's Brigade went through five commanders because of wounds and death -- more than any other unit on the battlefield, North or South. The 10th Virginia lost 124 men fighting under this flag at Chancellorsville.
