Union Injured Went to Hospital Rock:
When Captain Hauser of the 33rd Indiana was shot in the finger, he was taken to the Union field hospital under a rock overhang which became known as Hospital Rock. Army surgeons removed his finger and he returned to the battle.
Others weren't as lucky.

"Our wounded were brought in... we have charge of 18 wounded, including 3 secessionists, and 3 are dead."
-- Reverend EF Raffensperger, Chaplain, 14th Ohio Infantry

Confederate Surgeons Were Busy in the Valley:
Confederate surgeons struggled to treat the rush of wounded being brought to their hospital located in old buildings down the road.

"As we passed the Hospital there was a large crowd collected around it, and they were still bringing in the wounded... The surgical staff had their hands fall."
-- Captain Albert Roberts, 20th Tennessee Infantry
