Existing comment: First Terrace:
A large ceremonial building on the southwest corner burned around A.D. 1150. A small platform mound and new building were erected above this by the Mississippians, and rebuilt eight times over the following 100 years, creating the visible rise.
In the 1730s, French priests built a small chapel for the Cahokia (Illini) Indians who may have had a small village on this terrace. Several of the Cahokia were found buried near the chapel.
