Existing comment: Cicada Who?
Cicadas do not sting or bite but can be alarming as they are generally poor flyers and often bump into walls, cars, and people. The current generation of periodical Cicadas is called Brood X, and they have been living underground for the past 17 years! They come to the surface for a few weeks in May and June to mate and reproduce, then their offspring burrow underground for another 17 years.
Though they won't bite, they are edible! And BBQ recipes can be found online. Rare birds have been spotted in the Gardens dining on Brood X, including the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak and Scarlet Tanager.
Many dogs also like to eat the Cicadas, but may become sick is they eat too many, so limit their consumption.
