Existing comment: "Mr. Madison's War"
The United States' declaration of war passed Congress despite intense opposition from the Federalist Party which was particularly strong in the northeast. The American shipping embargoes preceding the war had seriously depressed seaborne commerce in New England and they opposed the War on economic, political, and religious grounds. The Federalists called the war "Mr. Madison's War."
