The timber industry was important and profitable in the area from the 1890s on. The industry depending on the area's water to transport timber. Oxen were used to pull logging carts from the woods located in marshy areas to sawmills next to creeks and rivers. Rivers and creeks helped move timber from sawmills to larger planing mills.
Timber was harvested in the late fall and early winter. Mill workers either farmed or worked in the canneries during the spring and summer months.
