Existing comment: The original Robert E. Lee Bridge spanned the James River for 54 years just west of here until the bridge was closed in 1988 and removed shortly thereafter.
The new structure is a cast-in-place segmental box girder bridge and was erected using a balanced cantilever construction method. This bridge is the first of its type to be erected in Virginia.
It was built as a cooperative effort between the City of Richmond, the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.
