Existing comment: Please pardon our mess as we learn more about how this space may have looked during Lincoln's time! The walls, as you see them now, show remnants of decorative painting uncovered during the final months of the Cottage restoration in 2007. The lower portion of the wall was meant to appear like walnut and oak paneling (wainscot). The upper portion was mauve and the ceiling a Robin's egg blue. It was recently discovered that the staircase was originally approximately 8-10" lower and had a curved baseboard much like you see on the main staircase.
