Existing comment: Black Jacks
Black sailors, known as Black Jacks, often made up 20 percent of crews. (Sailors of that era were called Jack Tars.) George Roberts, shown here in old age, served as a gunner aboard Thomas Boyle's Chesseur. Earliest in the war Robinson had been captured by the British and briefly imprisoned in Jamaica.
