Keifer Hall, 16, Student
Bannister, MI

Keifer Hall is a 16-year-old from the central Michigan community of Bannister. He first learned of Red Bull Art of Can through a website, and when his art teacher at Ovid-Elsie High School (where Hall is a junior) encouraged him to enter, the student took inspiration from skateboarding in Philadelphia's famed LOVE Park and decided to create his own reproduction of a pop-art classic: Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture, for which the park is named.

Curving granite stairs and ledges have made LOVE Park (officially, JFK Plaza) a mecca for skateboarders, who continue to revere the location despite recent city bans on skating there. And the bold form and red-and-blue colors of the LOVE sculpture – not to mention its special significance for skaters – made it a natural for Hall to replicate with Red Bull cans. But first he had to figure out which material would work best as a means of structural support. "I used foam on the inside to get the shape," he explains, "and 70 cans – I drank them all." In total, "Aluminum Affection" required about 20 hours to create. As Hall's art teacher will no doubt be glad to hear, the student attests that his favorite part of the project was learning new techniques.
