Existing comment: The Speed of Red Bull
Liat Waks. 28, Research Assistant
Brookline, MA

With a degree in biotechnology engineering, Liat Waks is a dedicated scientist, working at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to help develop a vaccine for HIV. In her free time, she's just as passionate about art. "It lets me express my ideas without rules," she comments. "My imagination comes to life." Waks has created everything from a subway advertisement to work for a multi-participant show called the Sketchbook Project. She even sells her clothing designs online. And inevitably, her positive outlook shines through. The 28-year-old Israeli native says, "My art is made with a smile to make people smile."

That sense of fun is what drew Waks to create a work for the Red Bull Art of Can exhibition, and she decided to use a snail as her subject because she loved the inherent paradox: "I wanted to give something that is usually slow the Red Bull quality – making it faster than a cheetah," she says, urging viewers to take note of the work's built-in speedometer. Waks attests that the best part of the project was seeing her vision come to life: "Initially it was a bag full of cans, and afterwards it was a snail sitting on my table looking at me."
