Daniel G. Vaisvilas, 40, Metal Recycler/Musician
Chicago, IL

"I recycle metal by day and play metal by night, hence the name of my entry," says Daniel G. Vaisvilas of Chicago. Vaisvilas, aka Moshman Dan, heard about Red Bull Art of Can from his older brother, Art, who exhibited a piece at the Houston event last year and has another work on display at Union Station. Since he was between gigs anyway, Vaisvilas the younger decided to take the time to create something close to his heart: a guitar. (The idea came to him during a practice session.) In all, Vaisvilas used more than fifty cans to construct the aluminum instrument, sacrificing 30 hours of potential rehearsal time to assemble the entry. "The best part of the experience was seeing it was finally coming together," he remembers.

The metal-focused musician is currently working on forming a band and even has his own stage at home, which helps him overcome performance jitters. Besides writing songs, his many interests include drawing, fishing, the great outdoors, cooking, wine tasting, and – whenever possible – travel. He says, "I would like to build my own home one day on some small property with my very own lake and barn, so I can start a sculpting business out of scrap metal."
