Boris Shpeizman, "above 18", Artist
Tel Aviv, Israel

"'To walk on the edge' was always my motto in life," says Boris Shpeizman. "To walk the line where one art direction ends but a new one is yet to begin; where the possibilities of matter are brought to their limit and where ideas are brought to the absurd – that is where I practice my art." Shpeizman's primary goal is to intertwine traditional glassblowing and contemporary art, and he believes that "any material reveals its hidden and surprising qualities only in extreme situations."

Shpeizman grew up in Leningrad, USSR (now Saint Petersburg). When his involvement in the human rights movement put him at risk for arrest, he emigrated to Israel. After a few years of working as a dentist, Shpeizman took up painting and sculpture, ultimately receiving a BFA from the Department of Ceramic and Glass Design at Bezalel Academy of Art and closing his dental clinic to devote all his energy to glass blowing. Shpeizman's works have been exhibited on many continents, and he has earned numerous scholarships and awards. Currently, he shares his knowledge as a lecturer at his alma mater and has a glass studio in Tel Aviv. In describing his work with glass, the artist clarifies, "In fact, I do not ‘work,' but rather ‘tame' it."
