Christine McCray-Bethea, 45, Artist/Arts Administration
Pittsburgh, PA

Christine McCray-Bethea calls herself "the accidental artist." Although she's harbored a passion for art since childhood, McCray-Bethea made art her profession only after pursuing careers in copywriting and real estate administration. Now 45, she's found her métier. "Currently I devote all my time to the arts, which includes working as an arts educator and historian as well as creating my own work from found objects and recycled materials," she says. "To me, the idea of taking something bound for a landfill and reusing it in an artful and creative way is as noble an attempt as any to save the planet!"

The Pittsburgh resident has been exhibited locally and nationally, and her work as a quilter has been documented and archived by the Senator John Heinz History Center. She's also an avid blogger, writing about technology, green trends, and (of course) art. Her "Bull as Folk" is a new take on the venerable log cabin quilt-piecing method. The artist states, "I love the pioneering spirit of this country and often reflect both historical and modern versions of this aesthetic in my work, usually in very whimsical ways." She adds, "I'm proud to be part of efforts to recognize recycling and the exciting role artists can play in that process."
